2004's Most Broadcast Artists and Recordings

2004 is proving, yet again, to be a remarkable year for Australian music with the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia (PPCA) confirming the significant impression that Australian music made on the airwaves during the year ending June 2004. The annual PPCA Most Broadcast lists show that nine Australian acts made it into the 2004 Top 50 Most Broadcast Artists# list, while 24 local tracks featured in the 2004 Top 100 Most Broadcast Recordings# list.

“In 2004, a number of local acts were supported by Australian radio and TV broadcasters,” comments Stephen Peach, CEO of PPCA, “and we are pleased to confirm that for the first time in PPCA history, the top three places on the Most Broadcast Artists list are occupied by local acts.”

Brisbane super-group, Powderfinger, has been named the 2004 PPCA Most Broadcast Act - an achievement which clearly reflects the appeal of Powderfinger’s growing music catalogue which, in 2004, included their 5th album Vulture Street. Four tracks from Vulture Street - ‘On My Mind’, ‘Sunsets’, ‘Love Your Way’ and ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’ also appeared on the 2004 Top 100 Most Broadcast Recordings list.

The 2003 Most Broadcast Artist, Kylie Minogue, has again proven she is a musical force to reckon with, taking the No. 2 spot on this latest list. Kylie’s increasing repertoire, established over her successful 17 year career, has once more cemented her notable position in the Top 50.

Australia’s favourite songstress Delta Goodrem, also confirmed her popularity with commercial broadcasters appearing third on the 2004 Most Broadcast Artist list, with four recordings ‘Predictable’, ‘Innocent Eyes’, ‘Not me, Not I’ and ‘Lost Without You’ featuring in the Top 100 Recordings.

“Over the years Australian artists have featured strongly on the PPCA Most Broadcast lists,” continues Stephen Peach, “We are very pleased with the phenomenal achievements of these local acts. These results genuinely show the strength of the local industry across a wide range of broadcast formats.”

The 2004 PPCA Most Broadcast Recordings list replicates many of last years big hits in Australian music. In addition to entries by the above noted artists, popular broadcast tracks included ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’, ‘Look What You’ve Done’ and ‘Rollover DJ’ by Melbourne rockers Jet, two entries each by Shannon Noll (‘What About Me’ and ‘Drive’), Guy Sebastian (‘All I Need Is You’ and ‘Angels Brought Me Here’) and Amiel (‘Lovesong’ and ‘Obsession’) along with entries by Alex Lloyd, the John Butler Trio and Lo-Tel.

“On behalf of PPCA” comments Stephen, “I’d like to congratulate all of the Australian acts who appeared on this year’s PPCA lists for their exceptional broadcasting achievements.”

PPCA is a national non-profit organisation authorised to grant licenses for the public playing of sound recordings or music videos. The Most Broadcast results are taken from the extensive play list and broadcast data collated by PPCA to distribute net licence income to Licensors, Artists and to the PPCA Performers’ Trust foundation.
