ARIA and PPCA welcome the NSW Labor Government

26 March 2023

Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) and Phonographic Performance Company of Australia (PPCA) congratulate Premier Elect Chris Minns and the NSW Labor Party on winning the New South Wales state election.

ARIA and PPCA CEO, Annabelle Herd, said: “The NSW Labor party have made several commitments that prioritise contemporary Australian music as a real cultural and economic contributor to the state. We wholeheartedly congratulate the incoming Premier, The Hon. John Graham MLC – former shadow minister for arts, music and the night time economy – who has been a tireless advocate for music, and the party on tonight’s victory and look forward to working closely with them to provide the considered support necessary to unlock the true potential of music in NSW.

“The incoming NSW Government has made the largest single commitment to music in Australian history, at a state or federal level, in $103 million to back the industry’s Vote Music plan. This, in addition to their commitment to support hundreds of live gigs across the state through the continuation of Great Southern Nights until 2026; $4 million over four years to ensure industry compliance with codes of conduct to support the drive for cultural change in music in response to the Raising Their Voices report; as well as $2 million over four years delivered to Support Act, gives music in NSW an incredible starting point to recover and realise new heights of global recognition,” she said.

“We also thank the former Coalition Government, and in particular, former Minister for Tourism Stuart Ayres for his passion and commitment to help the industry through COVID. His support for Great Southern Nights – born out of the need to assist music venues and artists through the pandemic – made a truly significant impact on the livelihoods of countless industry professionals and started the move to get people back out to see live music. Thank you also to former Arts Minister Ben Franklin.”
